The Greater German Reich

“Where some states have an army, the Prussian Army has a state."

SCROLL DOWN

The Greater German Reich

“Where some states have an army, the Prussian Army has a state."

“Where some states have an army, the Prussian Army has a state." In the aftermath of the First Scinfaxi War, these words once again rang true for the German Reich. With the death of Hitler and the majority of the Nazi leadership, the Wehrmacht found itself the sole remaining organization in Europe capable of restoring order. German forces swiftly took control of territories devastated by the Scinfaxi siege, from the Atlantic Coast to the frontiers of former Poland. The new military government eschewed the divisive racial ideologies that formed the core of National Socialist politics; the SS was purged in an effort that culminated in Operation Flycatcher, in which over 70 prominent SS and pro-Nazi officers were assassinated.

Surging in growth after the post-war reunification, the Greater German Reich boasts a proud history of technological achievements, sophisticated industrial developments, and economic prowess. The nation is particularly famed for its terraforming methods, which have become standard across the Orion Arm, and its numerous technology exports. German-made spacecraft are highly regarded, with Hartmann-Krupp-built transports a common sight in orbit of nearly every major world. A strict adherence to Speerist Economic Thought has turned the German economy into a machine of the state itself, with a heavy reliance on robotics in manufacturing and raw material processing.

With over 6 billion citizens, the Greater German Reich is the third most populous nation within the Orion Arm. Its peoples are primarily Germanic yet include numerous ethnic and cultural groups from across the whole of former Earth. Political, cultural, social and personal rights are equal under law for all citizens regardless of gender, sexual orientation and personal identity. The German government does, however, encourage couples to raise children and promotes motherhood in the form of incentives for women leaving the workforce and subsidies for large families.
At the heart of German society remains the Armed Forces. All citizens are obligated to serve 15 months in the military, or alternatively, in civil protection organizations involved in disaster relief, emergency medical services, and frontier colonization efforts. Support for the military is very high across the whole of German society; a career in the armed forces is regarded as especially prestigious.

The Greater German Reich has had a longstanding rivalry with the Democratic Federation, although ties in recent years have begun to improve. German-Japanese relations have remained consistently favorable since the evacuation of Earth and German foreign policy affirms its relationship with the Empire of Japan as its most important bilateral partnership. As the leader of the interstellar Fascist movement, the GGR also has strong ties to the Italian Social Republic, the Spanish State, and many other smaller nations throughout the Orion Arm. The Soviet Union is regarded as the most prominent threat to the Greater German Reich, with both nations engaged in a prolonged ideological struggle and vast military buildup with one another. A period of open conflict between the Soviet Union and Greater German Reich began in 2281 following the German invasion of Tanarsus. Since then, conflict has spread to nearby border systems, as well as Vega, where some of the fiercest fighting has taken place.

The Democratic Federation

“The difficult we do immediately. The impossible takes a little longer.”

In the years leading up to the First Scinfaxi War, when the world was threatened by the spread of The Virus, no two nations sacrificed more than the United States and the British Empire. By their efforts alone, tens of millions of people were spared and entire cultures granted a safe haven in North America. Yet, in spite of this, or perhaps because of it, both nations emerged from the war with overburdened infrastructure and a devastated industrial base. Struggling to accommodate the millions of now permanent refugees and to quell the racial and societal tension endemic in such a crisis, the Americans and British embraced the spirit of cooperation and formed the United Nations. The creation of this organization, a declaration made during the darkest hours of the Scinfaxi War, espoused the freedom and unity of all mankind and became a rallying call for a new generation of survivors. In the centuries since its inception, this alliance has grown to include the restored French Republic, the Pacific States of America, the Confederation of Australasia, and many others. While officially known as the United Nations, to its citizens it is referred to as the Grand Entente, the Allies, or most commonly, the Democratic Federation.

Within the Orion Arm, the Federation is without equal: an alliance of powerful nation states founded on the concepts of cooperation, collective defense and personal liberty. With over 8 billion people spread across twenty member nations, the Federation operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions. It shares a single market governed by a standardized system of trade laws and is in the process of developing a monetary union with a standard currency. Federation companies are at the forefront of technological advances, especially in faster than light drives, pharmaceuticals, as well as medical, aerospace, and military equipment. While Federation members represent some of the wealthiest nations in the Orion Arm, income inequality has grown substantially in recent years, especially in the United States, causing this disparity to become a topic of heated debate between member nations.

Democratic Federation culture varies widely world to world and nation to nation, yet respect for human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights are pivotal components of each nation’s values. Many racial and cultural divisions, however, still exist as a result of the “Nations Within Nations” program which administered the millions of refugees living within North America until the colonization programs and subsequent evacuation. Many minority groups, disgruntled with life in the core DF systems, take the chance to shape new societies on frontier colony worlds.

The Democratic Federation retains the widest favorable public opinion of any nation within the Orion Arm, in part owing to its role in the establishment of many independent colonies including those in Alpha Centauri, Endi Martell, Tau Ceti and the Islamic Arab Republic. Despite a history of rivalry with the Greater German Reich and Soviet Union, tensions with both powers are beginning to thaw. As a result of American advances into the New Canaan Corridor, however, tensions between the DF and the Empire of Japan continue to run high. Disagreements within the Federation on both this issue and other political, economic, and social fronts are also widening the divide between each nation state; support for the Democratic Federation, while still high, is slowly waning.

The Soviet Union

"In October 1917 we parted with the old world rejecting it once and for all. We are moving toward a new world, the world of communism. We shall never turn off that road."

The Soviet Union

"In October 1917 we parted with the old world rejecting it once and for all. We are moving toward a new world, the world of communism. We shall never turn off that road."

The Soviet Union remains more of an enigma than perhaps any other nation in human history. Its past is marked with stark contrasts, blending ancient European cultures with modern socialist ideals. Its actions have kept its rivals confused, with its true intentions never clear beyond doubt. Yet, if there is one unifying theme to its actions, it is the drive to expand Soviet power and the evolution of the communist system. In this effort, it has been undeniably successful. In the aftermath of the First Scinfaxi War, the Red Army occupied much of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, adding Bulgarian, Romanian, Chinese and Mongolian Socialist Republics into the Union. The power defined by the consolidation of these many disparate peoples, formed in the shadow of an alien menace, persists and thrives to this day.

Today, the Soviet Union is a vast nation that echoes its past on Earth. There are as many Soviet colonies as the next two largest nations combined: a matter of necessity when it came to establishing colonies capable of supporting its nearly 400 million citizens during the Second Scinfaxi War. The most prominent Soviet systems, Leningrad, Shaanxi, and Novosibirsk, are the equal of any of the grand capital worlds of the Orion Arm, yet many more remain underdeveloped backwaters. While high degrees of inefficiency and a large bureaucracy continue to plague Soviet developments, increasingly effective centralized state organs and seemingly endless resources have contributed to rapid industrial and economic development.  More spacecraft and machinery are produced in the Soviet Union than in any other nation, with Soviet exports particularly favored on the developing colonies of the Far Frontier for their reliability, ease of use, and low cost.

The Soviet Union has the Orion Arm’s largest population, with over 12 billion people. Its various component ethnic groups are nominally divided into 21 Soviet Republics, but continued emigration within the Soviet Union have blurred these lines considerably. The Russian people continue to dominate the Soviet Union with the Russian SSR foremost among the republics, but increasing Chinese influences can be found across the whole of the Union; the Chinese having surpassed the Ukrainian SSR as the second most populous republic in the late 2100s. Despite periodic attempts at Russification in its past, all citizens within the USSR are treated as equals before the law with discrimination of any kind widely abhorred as tool of the bourgeoisie and incompatible with Soviet values.

The Soviet Armed Forces are the largest in the Orion Arm, generally manned by conscripts but with a core of veterans and professionals. The Soviet Navy, traditionally marginalized in favor of the Red Army has grown in priority as the Soviet Union seeks to project its power across the whole of the Orion Arm. The development of the Rodina, the largest class of ship ever built, signifies a change in Soviet military strategy and vastly increases its capabilities.

The Soviet Union maintains somewhat icy relations with the Democratic Federation, yet several trade agreements exist with its members, particularly with the French Republic. The Empire of Japan is especially hostile towards the Soviet Union with periodic skirmishes, and trade only taking place rarely through intermediaries in the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Relations with many smaller nations including the Islamic Arab Republic, Federative Republic of Endi Martell, the New Canaan Republic and the Vega Confederation are generally much more favorable, and include significant arms deals and economic assistance treaties. The Greater German Reich remains the primary rival of the Soviet Union in military and territorial matters, a position made apparent in news feeds across human space when the two nations entered into a period of undeclared war over their respective border systems and the Soviet ally of Vega.

The Empire of Japan

"Life and death, union and separation, follow hard upon one another. Nothing is steadfast but the will, nothing endures but one's achievements. These alone count in life."

The Empire of Japan

"Life and death, union and separation, follow hard upon one another. Nothing is steadfast but the will, nothing endures but one's achievements. These alone count in life."

Viewed as insular and anachronistic for much of its history, Japan has repeatedly astonished outsiders with its capacity to master emerging technologies and adapt to changing international climates while retaining its ancient culture and national character. The Empire of Japan suffered devastating losses in the First Scinfaxi War, and withdrew from many of its overseas territorial claims after the war to support the homeland restoration effort. During the initial space race of the 1960s and the first colonization efforts decades later, Japan advanced alone. The Empire even declined entry into the Alpha Centauri project, the only major nation to do so. Yet, not only was Japan able to secure its place in the Orion Arm, but the technologies and methods by which it did so were uniquely innovative and, as history would show, indicative of the paths that space travel and terraforming technology would take in the following era of colonization.

Japan is the smallest of the superpowers of Orion, with its colonies spread across only 8 separate systems. Yet, each of these systems are among the most highly developed in the entire Orion Arm, with robust infrastracture and efficient industrial design that rivals or even surpasses that of the German Reich. With over 7 billion citizens inhabiting its few worlds, it is one of the most densely populated regions of the Orion Arm.

The Japanese economy is primarily reliant on mega-conglomerate corporations whose disproportional representation in government has led to a quasi-fascist economic model. The high tech sector of the nation’s economy is particularly well regarded leading the Orion Arm in robotics, electronics and reactor design. Japanese-developed energy generation technology can be found at the heart of many colonial settlements, as well as powering anything from personal transports to luxury spaceliners.

Japanese culture has experienced numerous upheavals through its transition into an interstellar superpower, but the core characteristics of its national identity remain unchanged. The Emperor is treated with the utmost reverence as both the symbol of the state and the highest authority within Shinto, the state religion. The concept of Bushido, or “The Way of the Warrior” is often exploited to consolidate support for Japanese nationalism and the military. This ideology is also used to support the idea that Japan bears the responsibility of leading the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere as the head of a family of Asian nations.

Though Japan has largely retained its isolationist position in Orion politics, the Empire is able to secure trade agreements with other nations across the Orion Arm through its network of puppet governments in the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Germany is Japan’s closest partner outside of the Sphere, yet considerable differences in recent years have strained the relationship far more than outsiders may believe. The Empire is largely hostile towards the Soviet Union and Democratic Federation: the historical rivals and perceived oppressors of Japan. In particular, the Empire has started an aggressive expansion program to extend its influence into the New Canaan Corridor, the likely focal point of any future Japanese-Federation conflict.

Regional Powers

Regional Powers

The United Centauri Republic

As both the first colony established outside of the Solar system and the first to achieve its independence, Alpha Centauri has grown to become what many consider the cultural and financial capital of humanity. Situated at a natural transport hub between the four major superpowers, in the aftermath of the evacuation of Earth Alpha Centauri became the new de facto center of the Orion Arm. It is also a major center of interstellar diplomacy, home to the League of Nations Headquarters, the International Court of Justice and the League of Nations Colonial Council.

Originally settled by a joint Federation / Soviet / German colonial program, during the evacuation of Earth the nation accepted tens of millions of refugees from nearly every ethnic and cultural background. Today the United Centauri Republic has one of the most diverse societies in the Orion Arm and with 1.7 billion citizens is the single most populous star system in the Orion Arm. Highly developed with an advanced economy and industrial base, Alpha Centauri is unquestionably the Orion Arm’s leading regional power.

Historically neutral, the United Centauri Republic maintains diplomatic relations with every country in the Orion Arm and is often used as intermediary in international affairs. Unofficially, growing concern over the Soviet-German war and Japanese expansion has resulted in the Republic aligning itself closer to the Democratic Federation.

The Islamic Arab Republic

Existing in name only for much of its early history, the Islamic Arab Republic finally emerged from a scattered collection of refugee zones and disparate protectorates in the early 22nd century. Uniting the peoples of former North Africa, the IAR today spans across six separate star systems and with over two billion citizens is one of the largest nations in the Orion Arm.

A former member of the Democratic Federation, disagreements with Federation policies, namely the alliance’s antagonistic relationship towards the Greater German Reich and Soviet Union, led in 2203 to a national referendum in which the Islamic Arab Republic formally withdrew from the DF. Since its emergence as an independent entity, the IAR has become a powerful influence on interstellar politics in its own right and an effective counterbalance to German and Federation influences in the region.

Despite a vast, developed economy, ineffective centralized policies have stymied opportunities for growth and led to periodic phases of limited job opportunities and public discontent. Corruption amongst government agencies is reportedly widespread and the current political situation is widely regarded as unstable.

Successful diplomatic maneuvers have ensured relations with the Islamic Arab Republic’s two largest neighbors, the Democratic Federation and Greater German Reich remain positive and the nation serves as a neutral center for trade between the two superpowers. The Federal Nordic Cooperative is the IAR’s main competitor for the German/Federation market and the two nations have an icy relationship punctuated by periodic border skirmishes.

The Federal Nordic Cooperative

Modeled on the success of the Democratic Federation, the Federal Nordic Cooperate is an alliance between the Kingdoms of Norway and Sweden, established in the aftermath of the First Scinfaxi War. Working with both the United Kingdom and the Greater German Reich during the colonization era, the FNC was able to colonize two star systems on the edge of the Perseus Gulf.

With a little over 400 million citizens the FNC is one of the smaller regional powers, yet it’s exceptionally developed public infrastructure, highly advanced economy and breadth of natural resources has made Sweden and Norway among the most prosperous nations in the Orion Arm. The FNC includes a common currency, shared internal market and a united foreign policy and military apparatus. Situated on the innermost edge of the Far Frontier, the FNC is increasingly becoming a major transport hub between the core worlds of the Solar Sector and the emerging colonies within the Pillars of Winter and Arrowhead spur.

A growing rivalry with the Islamic Arab Republic continues to dominate FNC foreign policy with border skirmishes occurring intermittently between the two powers. These conflicts, in conjunction with a growing piracy element in the region has spurred the FNC to modernize its armed forces, further worsening its relationship with the IAR. Despite this conflict, relations with both the Greater German Reich and Democratic Federation remain positive and public opinion of the Federal Nordic Cooperative remains high across the Orion Arm.

The Vega
Confederation

Among the first wave of German colonies, Vega’s undesirable position on the outskirts of the core German systems left it underprioritized and underdeveloped. Never officially absorbed into the Greater German Reich, the system was instead granted independence under the authority of a pro-German puppet government; the Vega Union State. During the evacuation of Earth, Vega was a major partner in the Sanctuary Worlds program and received millions of refugees, drastically altering its demographics and eroding support for the colonies pro-German policies. A civil war in the 2210s between fascist hardliners and coalition of liberal and socialist groups resulted in the overthrow of the Union State and the establishment of the Confederation of Vega.

Heavily supported by the Soviet Union, the People’s Unity Party of Vega was eventually able to seize control of the state security apparatus, the justice system and the armed forces. With rival parties sidelined and a series of rigged elections, the Confederation of Vega was slowly transformed into a Marxist-Leninist state. Still struggling to neutralize Union State sympathizers and rampant piracy across the system, the Confederation joined the Kharkov Pact in 2273 inviting Soviet aligned naval forces to assist in patrolling the system.

With the outbreak of open conflict between the Soviet Union and the Greater German Reich the Confederation of Vega had hoped to remain on the sidelines and barely resisted leaving the Kharkov Pact altogether. Yet despite diplomatic posturing and massive preparations, the Kriegsmarine invaded the system in 2289, plunging the system into the most brutal conflict the Orion Arm has ever seen.

The Italian Social Republic

During the final days of the Second Scinfaxi War, the National Fascist Party of Italy finally renounced their claim to the Roman Empire on Earth and vowed they would instead build a new Rome in the stars. Today the gleaming capital of Italia on Novas Roma fulfills this promise, presiding over the two star systems and 1.1 billion people of the Italian Social Republic.

Existing under German hegemony in the aftermath of the First Scinfaxi War, Italy remained a committed member of the Fascist bloc and accepted its status as principal ally of the German Reich. This alliance, one of the longest standing in the Orion Arm continues to define the Italian state, with detractors often referring to it as a German puppet government. Despite this, the Italian people remain fiercely independent, retaining their predominately Latin and Catholic culture and resisting most outside influences. Italian fascism remains distinctly Italian, distinguishable from both modern German fascism and Nazism.

The Italian economy is primarily driven by the manufacture of high quality consumer goods and large scale agriculture. It also has a sizable underground economy, which by some estimates accounts for nearly 13% of the GDP. Problems with corruption and organized crime continue to hamper economic development, but despite this the Italian Social Republic remains in a state of economic revival, following a particularly harsh depression throughout most of the 2260s.

As a member of the fascist bloc, Italian-German relations are very strong and Italy maintains close ties to every major fascist party in the Orion Arm. Unlike most other fascist governments, the Italian Social State has retained friendly relations with the Democratic Federation for much of its history, resulting in several important trade agreements. Diplomatic ties to the Soviet Union are non-existent, with several Italian fleets and armies among those fighting on Vega and the border system of Tanarsus.

The Spanish
State

One of the last independent nations in German-dominated Europe, the Spanish State is among the staunchest allies of the Greater German Reich and an influential fascist power in its own right. Centered on the Hispania system, the Spanish State has maintained its distinct identity and culture in the face of German hegemony.

Originally established in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, the Spanish State proved victorious over the Spanish Republic with German and Italian aid. The Virus Crisis and the First Scinfaxi War devastated Spain, forcing the Spanish government to be exiled in Germany for most of the conflict. After the Scinfaxi retreat, the Spanish State succeeded in maintaining itself as the sole independent power in Iberia, and rebuilt the entire peninsula in the image of the ruling Falange Party. The culture of authoritarian fascism - modeled on that of Germany - was fused with traditional Spanish culture to create a "new" Spain for the twentieth century and beyond. Spain joined the Greater German Reich's interstellar colonization program, settling the Hispania system and quickly reestablishing itself among the stars.

The modern Spanish State is a regional power, with a robust economy providing luxury goods for much of the galaxy, and a powerful military that has served alongside the Greater German Reich in several military campaigns throughout the 22nd and 23rd centuries. The Spanish remain loyal allies of the Greater German Reich, and their relations with the ideologically-opposed Soviet Union and Democratic Federation remain tense. The Spanish State has a particular enmity with the latino populations of the Federation, as both vie for cultural hegemony within the Hispanophone world.
